RACE CAR FOR A NEW ERA.

The BMW M Hybrid V8. The BMW M Hybrid V8 competes against the best of the best on the biggest stages of international prototype racing for BMW M Motorsport.

Since the 2023 season, the new car has been battling it out for overall victory in the GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC), at such prestigious classics as the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the iconic Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. Since the 2024 season, BMW M Motorsport also competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship with the car. The last big victory for a BMW prototype came back in 1999, when the BMW V12 LMR won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That car had also triumphed in the 12 Hours of Sebring in the same season. Regulations specify that LMDh race cars have a combustion engine and an electric motor. While each manufacturer can use their own combustion engine, the electric motor, battery and transmission are standard parts. The BMW M Hybrid V8 is powered by the P66/3 eight-cylinder turbo engine with supplementary electric drive. The combustion engine is based on the DTM unit used in the BMW M4 DTM in 2017 and 2018. During two phases of reconstruction, it underwent comprehensive adjustments to meet the stringent requirements of the LMDh hybrid drive system. The chassis is built by an external partner. For the BMW M Hybrid V8, BMW M Motorsport is working closely with the legendary Italian race car specialist Dallara.

TRADITION AND MODERNITY.

The "Inception" livery integrates themes of digitality and dimensionality in a bold, high contrast mosaic. From multiple perspectives the iconic M colours appear in the same sequence they occur in the M logo: light blue on the left, dark blue in the middle, and red on the right, but now in three extruded, pixel-like dimensions. This approach sets up an asymmetrical overall layout for the car which also integrates a non-reflective matte black portion ahead of the driver to assist their forward focus. For dark areas of the livery no foil is applicated to allow the authentic carbon fibre construction show through, and save weight at the same time.

UPDATED FOR 2026.

New front, new headlights and a slightly smaller kidney grille: the BMW M Hybrid V8 will kick off the 2026 seasons in the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IMSA series) with an updated exterior design and improved aerodynamics. However, it will retain its unique BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, making the car an unmistakable highlight. The updates serve to improve the car’s performance across all track layouts as well as the cooling of the drivetrain and the brakes. BMW M Motorsport is thus implementing the insights gained by its engineers during previous races.
